The Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) has unveiled an exciting multi-year plan to enhance airport security checkpoints across the country through the installation of cutting-edge computed tomography (CT) technology. This significant initiative highlights CATSA’s dedication to advancing aviation security while improving the overall travel experience for passengers.
The CT technology offers a breakthrough in security screening by generating advanced three-dimensional rotatable images, enabling security officers to better detect explosives and other potential threats. For travelers, this innovation means they can keep permitted liquids, aerosols, gels (under 100 mL), medical devices, and large electronics in their carry-on luggage during screening, making the process more seamless and efficient.
The first complete installation of this groundbreaking CT system has already been completed at the newly established ABC security screening checkpoint at Vancouver International Airport. This achievement is the result of close collaboration between CATSA and the Airport Authority, setting the stage for more upgrades to follow.
Additional installations are set to begin at other airports across Canada starting in the fall of 2024. These efforts will continue over the coming years, with airport authorities playing a crucial role in the successful nationwide deployment of this technology. Their ongoing cooperation is essential to making this project a reality.
CATSA, in partnership with its third-party screening contractors and key air travel partners, is committed to delivering top-tier security screening and service throughout the rollout of this state-of-the-art CT technology, ensuring safer and smoother air travel for everyone.
Nada Semaan CATSA President and Chief Executive Officer “We’re focused on implementing state-of-the-art solutions that contribute to an enhanced screening experience while ensuring the highest levels of security. While the deployment of this technology spans over several years, we’re excited about the positive change it will bring to the overall passenger experience.”
The Honourable Pablo Rodriguez, Minister of Transport “It’s great to see this innovative use of technology in action. This will make security screening more effective and improve the passenger experience for Canadians and tourists in our airports across Canada.”
Tamara Vrooman President and CEO at Vancouver International Airport (YVR) “I am excited to introduce our newly renovated domestic checkpoint showcasing advanced security screening equipment – a first in Canada. With this innovative system, you can now move through security effortlessly—no need to remove liquids, aerosols, gels, or large electronics from your carry-on bags—while maintaining the highest security standards. Our $30 million investment has expanded and modernized this space with the traveller in mind and reflects our commitment to blending functionality with a unique sense of place.”
